Silvia Cantelli Berarducci, Elezioni e consacrazioni episcopali nella Gallia merovingia del sec. VI
Fin dall’inizio del loro governo i sovrani merovingi esercitarono un potere significativo sulle ordinazioni episcopali, destinato ad accrescersi nel corso del sec. VI. Ma quale fu l’atteggiamento dell’élite episcopale di fronte al ruolo assunto dalla potestà secolare nella designazione della più alta carica ecclesiastica? Tra le fonti di cui disponiamo per rispondere a questa domanda, un posto speciale spetta agli atti dei concili che si tennero entro i confini della Gallia merovingia: essi infatti dedicano un certo numero di canoni alle procedure che regolano la consacrazione di un vescovo. Tali canoni costituiscono il filo conduttore del presente lavoro, il cui obiettivo è fornire qualche suggestione sulle convinzioni e gli auspici che determinarono e condizionarono il punto di vista degli esponenti di maggior spicco dell’alto clero che, per tutto il secolo VI, continuarono a provenire dalle grandi famiglie dell’aristocrazia gallo-romana.
From the beginning of their government Merovingian kings exercised a significant power on the episcopal ordinations, destined to increase during the sixth century. But what was the attitude of the ecclesiastical élite in front of the power assumed by the secular authority in the designation of the highest ecclesiastical office? Among the sources that we have to answer this question, a special place belongs to the acts of the councils which were held within the confines of Merovingian Gaul: in fact, they devote a certain number of canons to the procedures governing the consecration of a bishop. These canons are the leitmotif of this work, whose goal is to provide some suggestions on beliefs and hopes that determined and conditioned the point of view taken by the exponents of major high clergy, that continued to come from great families of the Gallo-Roman aristocracy throughout the entire sixth century.
David McKitterick, Putting the past on show. Old books and communal memory in the nineteenth century
The printed word is one of the most powerful means we possess of recording the past. In the nineteenth century wealthy bibliophiles encouraged the collecting of early and rare editions; but these bibliophiles were a small minority. What other means were used to educate public memory as represented in print? Using examples from Italy, Germany, France, England, Belgium and the Netherlands, including Gutenberg, Dante and William Caxton, this article shows how the celebration of anniversaries, expressed in statues and exhibitions, created public memory. The history of printing, and its public display in exhibitions and museums, was used to promote political unity.

During the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries women did play an important role both as work force and in trading activities since they carried out many tasks in several fields of different occupations. Women were mainly involved in the textile industry but, in addition, working women were heavily involved in many groups of activities, even in the building industry. In many countries of medieval Europe women’s work in building industry was prominent. In this essay we report an exceptional document showing that nearly 300 women dug a ditch.
In molte città italiane ed europee, nei secoli XIV e XV, il lavoro femminile era diffuso, accanto alle tradizionali occupazioni tessili, in una miriade di altre attività, che solo studi recenti stanno progressivamente mettendo in luce. Tra queste, un ruolo significativo va sicuramente ascritto al massiccio impiego delle donne nell’edilizia, illustrato fino ad ora da un numero alquanto esiguo di saggi prevalentemente francesi e spagnoli. In questa sede viene pubblicato un documento di notevole interesse relativo invece all’Italia settentrionale: l’elenco di quasi 300 operaie impiegate nello scavo di una roggia nei pressi di Pavia.
